Ezekiel Gibbs

(1889-1992) Ft. Bend County, TX

Born in Ft. Bend County, TX, Gibbs worked as a sharecropper most of his adult life. He began making art after his wife died in 1972. With watercolor, crayon, pencil, and oil pastels, Gibbs executed his images on found materials such as grocery bags and old letters. His work has been widely published, and exhibited in many museum shows, including Passionate Visions of the American South, and Spirited Journeys. Because of an ongoing legal dispute concerning his estate, his work is extremely difficult to find.
